Fives and Heronians Cricket Club Saturday 1st XI v Chingford on Sat 21 May 2011 at 12.30 pm
Fives and Heronians Cricket Club Won By 8 Wickets

Match report An incredible 2nd wicket partnership of 237 between Ed Buxton and Phil Apps saw Fives and Heronians to their second successive win in SNEL division one against Chingford on Saturday.

Both men scored superlative tons and set the club record 2nd wicket partnership for any Fives XI as well as the 5th all-time stand for any wicket.

Their feat was all the more remarkable after skipper Gary Edwards was very unlucky to be bowled off his thigh pad down the leg-side to the 3rd ball of the Fives innings for 0 as Chingford rallied from a middle-innings stutter to register what seemed a competitive 241-7 off their allotted 50 overs.

Both Buxton and Apps must have known it was their day after they started in streaky fashion edging a number of their opening deliveries wide of fielders in the face of top swing bowling from the visitors Lenny Daniels and Ali Aamir - Buxton in particular was very fortunate to be dropped to a regulation catch at slip on 0 and made hay whilst the sun shone.

Apps started the free scoring by driving Daniels for four and six in successive balls as Fives moved to 74-1 off 14 overs.

Spinners McMurray and MacGregor initially kept runs down until Buxton launched two straight sixes off the later - the first taking him to 50 scored from 70 deliveries with Apps soon reaching his own 50 with a boundary from 53 balls as the partnership passed 100.

Runs were flowing with ease as the stand moved into the 200's and the target under 50 with Buxton swotting Gill for six over deep square-leg.

Both men approached their tons with no fear as Apps on-drove the returning Daniels for six then Buxton beautifully pulled Harris over the mid-wicket hedges into the adjoining fields for the shot of the day and just two balls later he drove nervously in the air but avoided the fielder as the ball raced to the ropes to bring up his 100 from 113 balls faced.

Apps soon followed to a superb century with a driven four off Harris - his 2nd 50 took just 32 balls - but was then out just two balls later attempting the winning hit as he was caught on the boundary for 104 off 87 balls with 16 fours and 2 sixes.

The game ended in farcical fashion next over as new man Glenn Jackson drove to mid-off and after being sent back attempting a run the overthrow from the fielder sailed to the ropes for four to give Fives the 8 wicket victory with nearly 14 overs remaining - Buxton carried his bat for an excellent 118 off 125 balls including 10 fours and 5 sixes.

Earlier in the day Chingford made a decent start thanks to openers James Hill (38) and Billy Rhone (31) who shared 69 for the 1st wicket but having been bogged down by the irrepressible Stuart Knapman and Nick Rotsey rather faltered to 97-4 at the half-way point.

Rotsey bowled a beautiful 10 over spell of left-arm swing and was finally rewarded with two wickets in his final over with balls 4 and 6 as he bowled both Rhone and than Gill 2nd ball for a duck to end with superb figures of 10-3-30-2.

It was not a good day for Chingford's Gill as he later split the webbing on his left hand whilst bowling which held up play for nearly 10 mins - he came back out to finish his over but soon walked off the pitch to end his match and avoid further injury - he'll be joining Aussie overseas Liam Lannen, who was scoring for Chingford, on the sidelines.

At the other end Knapman was continuing his fine form this season as he collected the wickets of Hill and the dangerous Alfie Taylor for 12 - both to excellent skied catches at mid-off by Waqas Javaid and Buxton at mid-on respectively and finished his day with 3-40 in 10 overs with 2 maidens.

The visiting captain Shaun McMurray held his sides innings together with a composed 57 from 76 balls and shared 66 for the 5th wicket with Sam Kirnon who held back from his usual aggressive style with 37 off 77 but he couldn't resist a swipe at Steve Doig as Rahul Bhome nicely held another good Fives catch at mid-wicket to break the stand.

McMurray and Matthew O'Sullivan (20 not out) added 44 in 5 overs as Chingford passed 200 before Javaid returned to the attack and removed the former lbw at 207-6 in the 47th.

Ben MacGregor added a quick 10 before Knapman returned himself to castle the batter for his 3rd wicket of the afternoon but new batsman Daniels proceeded to smash the final two balls of the innings for four and six as Chingford rallied but this was a pretty disciplined bowling performance by Fives conceding just 9 wides before Buxton and Apps stole the show with their memorable partnership.

Fives remain 5th in division one on 45 points and are at home again next Saturday as Hadleigh and Thundersley in 6th are the visitors to The Paddock.
