Orsett v Fives and Heronians Cricket Club Saturday 1st XI on Sat 18 Jun 2011 at 1.00 pm
Match was Abandoned Due to Rain

Match report Fives and Heronians trip to Orsett ended in a washout after the second heavy downpour of the afternoon saw their SNEL division one clash at School Lane abandoned.

Jonny Kay was happy to have won the toss in bowler friendly conditions and even more so when he bowled Philip Landman third ball of the match for 0 to a superb ball that nipped back off the seam and in his next over enducing an edge off Stuart Moon’s bat with keeper Ben Britton holding on well as Orsett fell to 14-2 off 3 overs.

The hosts then moved comfortably to 55-2 off 11 overs when the first heavy rain of the day fell which meant an hour and a half lost and an early tea taken.

After the resumption, Kay turned to spin as Ryan Cunningham and Rahul Bhome got through 28 overs in quick time as Fives looked to a late afternoon run chase.

Bhome (13-2-49-0) went wicket less despite bowling with control but Cunningham showed his class again with 4-54 off 15 overs including 2 maidens with Ben Britton also in fine form with two stumpings off Cunningham and one from Muhammad Zafar’s leg-spin.

However, thanks big hitting from Mohammed Ahktar (37), home skipper Kevin Sargent (34), Jason Plom (26) and an assured 68 from opener Ryan Plom, Orsett were able to move to 200-7 off 46 overs when a declaration finally arrived despite an apparent agreement between the captains of an end to the innings at 175.

That left Fives just 37 minutes and 20 overs to chase an unlikely 201 and on a hiding to nothing Fives mis-firing batting order only served to add more woe as they collapsed to a palpable 34-5 off 10.3 overs with only Ed Buxton with more than half the total score (18) looking likely to challenge the tough target until he was brilliantly caught and bowled by off-spinner George Gibbon to a full blooded drive.

Buxton was fifth out with the score on 31 as Gary Edwards (lbw for 1 to Pavitt), Rahul Bhome (tamely pushing a bat-pad chance to silly mid-off to Gibbon for 5), Phil Apps (driving loosely to cover without score) and the promoted Zafar (chipping to mid-wicket for 1) all rather giving their wickets away during 63 balls of mayhem.

But alas the heavy rain returned just before the start of the last hour leaving puddles on the square and the match being abandoned at 18:32.

The only positive news from the visit to Orsett was the collection of six bonus points because at the time of the match being called-off, not only were Fives likely to lose but had only taken 3 bowling bonus points and thus doubled their tally thanks to the rain.

Fives remain 7th in division one on 70 points and are on their travels again next Saturday as they visit Hornchurch just one place but 12 points ahead of The Paddock outfit.
