Fives and Heronians Cricket Club Won By 2 Wickets

Match report Fives and Heronians completed a tense 2 wicket win vs Hornchurch at Harrow Lodge Park to claim 18 points and their 3rd SNEL division one victory of the season.

On a damp wicket the host’s stand-in skipper Simon Savides won the toss but decided to bowl first – a decision which appeared to have backfired at 22-3 after 12 overs.

Fives captain Jonny Kay and Stuart Knapman bowled tight spells of seam bowling with reward as Knapman had Billy Gordon caught behind for a 20 ball duck and Michael Bones mis-timing a clip to leg which took the outside edge and was well held by Phil Apps at cover whilst JK had Jamie Sorrell nicely caught at the wicket by Britton for his second of three catches in the afternoon for 19.

Hornchurch captain Savides and Brad Hodgkiss then shared 40 for the fourth wicket off just 7 overs until Ryan Cunningham took centre stage yet again as he claimed Hodgkiss for the first of a five wicket haul to a good catch by Neil Brathwaite at point for 19.

Andy Roberts joined his captain to add 36 but having moved to a run-a-ball 38, Savides couldn’t resist a swipe at Cunningham and Kay held on nicely at mid-on as the hosts fell to 98-5.

Roberts was next to go just 7 runs later as he also attempted a hit across the line to the slow left-arm bowler and was plumb lbw for 16.

Terry Ballard was brought into the attack at the leisure centre end and struck in his third over as Richard Sherlock swung and edged to Britton for 3 as the Harrow Lodge side limped to 108-7.

Having had Buckhurst Hill in a similar position three weeks previous but ultimately allowing Hill to recover and win the match, Fives supporters would have been forgiven for thinking lightning might strike twice as former Middlesex staffer Danny Evans and Richard Burd swung at most deliveries with some effect but with the partnership having reached 12 Cunningham struck for the fourth time as Ballard held on to a slog at mid-off to send Evans back for 12.

Next over Ballard captured his second wicket of the afternoon as he had Burd swinging across the line and out lbw for 6 to leave his side 120-9.

The last wicket pairing of Danny Cocklin and Myles Wells added a further 11 runs before Cunningham completed a superb ‘michelle’ with his quicker ball too good for Wells and Hornchurch had capitulated to 131 all out from just 37 overs.

All four bowlers claimed figures worth mentioning – Cunningham 10-2-37-5, Knapman 12-5-34-2, Ballard 6-1-18-2 and Kay 9-2-37-1.

The early finish to Hornchurch’s innings meant Fives had to bat out a tricky 11 overs before tea and lost early wickets in this period as Danny Evans pace was too good for Ed Buxton (3) and Neil Brathwaite (14) as both men edged behind to slip and keeper respectively.

Rahul Bhome and Nick Rotsey safely negotiated the fours overs together before the interval reaching 38-2 and leaving 88 mins and the last 20 overs to score the remaining 94 for victory.

After the break, Bhome and Rotsey moved their third wicket partnership to a match top effort of 51 in testing circumstances until Bhome played across the line to Cocklin and was lbw for 32 off 64 balls which included 4 fours and 1 six in a good innings combining attack and defence.

Whilst Rotsey struggled to hit the ball by repeatedly playing and missing, wickets continued to fall at the other end as Hornchurch’s left-arm spinner Danny Cocklin had Ballard caught and bowled for 7 and then Zafar inexplicitly slogging to his second ball after a surprise promotion and being caught at mid-off by Bones without score.

That left The Paddock outfit 86-5 but with still 28 mins and 20 overs to score the target now reduced to 46.

Rotsey found an able partner in Phil Apps but Hornchurch went for glory by bringing Evans back on he had Apps stuck in the crease and lbw for 6 leaving Fives 100-6.

A further 12 runs were added for the next wicket until what might have been the defining over of the game as Britton mis-timed a drive off Bones’ leg-spin to be caught at mid-off for 1 then having crossed positions when Britton was out, Rotsey clipped a certain two of his pads but a superb throw from the deep by Gordon had Knapman well short of his crease at the bowlers end and was run out for 0 without facing a ball.

Fives were now 113-8 after 34 overs – the first of the last 20 – still requiring 19 runs to win as Cunningham joined Rotsey.

Having already been dropped four times – twice in the slips – Rotsey continued to stick it out for the team and gather ones and twos as Fives edged nearer victory.

Cunningham was an able partner for Rotsey and he swept Bones to the vacant square-leg boundary for 4 as 10 runs were taken off Bones third over as the tide turned back to Fives.

Gordon replaced Bones with four required for victory and in attempting glory Rotsey was dropped for a fifth time at long-on but scampered two runs and then a single off the next delivery as the scores drew level.

In fitting fashion to an exciting match, a scrambled leg-bye to the third ball of Evans next over saw Fives scrape a tense 2 wicket win with 14 overs and 3 balls still remaining. Evans claimed 3-28 and Cocklin 3-29 but it was Rotsey who stole the show with a gutsy and determined innings on a difficult wicket as he finished unbeaten on a match-winning 41 from 100 balls including 4 boundaries.

Whilst Fives batting troubles continued albeit on a wicket helpful to bowling, a superb fielding and bowling display with seven catches and excellent ground fielding along with Rotsey’s innings of grit meant Kay’s men were worthy winners and the 18 win points take Fives up one place to 6th in division one on 88 points and next Saturday welcome second bottom Harold Wood to The Paddock.
