Fives and Heronians Cricket Club Saturday 1st XI v Harold Wood on Sat 02 Jul 2011 at 1.00 pm
Fives and Heronians Cricket Club Won By 5 Wickets
Match report
Fives and Heronians claimed successive SNEL division one victories with an accomplished batting display to beat Harold Wood by 5 wickets at The Paddock.
With Jonny Kay unavailable due to school commitments, vice-captain Gary Edwards took the reins again and lost his fourth consecutive toss of the season but wouldn't have been too disappointed as Harold Wood decided to bat first.
Stuart Knapman and Ryan Cunningham opened the bowling and kept Wood tight early on as the visitors limped to 25-1 off 13 overs as Knapman had Sohail caught behind for 13 by Ben Britton.
Waqas Javaid replaced Cunningham at the top end and not having bowled for nearly a month was a bit rusty and allowed Hollingsworth the opportunity to score a couple of boundaries.
Cunningham replaced Knapman at the pavilion end and struck with his third ball as he bowled the dangerous Wood skipper Rizwan Qureshi for just 6 leaving Wood 52-2 off 19 overs.
Leg-spinner Muhammad Zafar replaced Javaid as Edwards employed spin from both ends for 20 overs and claimed two wickets firstly of Hollingsworth for a gritty 49 from 90 as a missed pull saw the ball clip the top of the bails and then after a partnership of 41 with Brabner, Zafar had Hussain well caught by Knapman for 35.
Wood were now stuttering at 130-4 off 38 overs but with Richard Brabner keeping the board ticking, Kevin Gibson entered the crease and hit a superb 41 ball 56 which included 6 fours and 2 sixes as he took his side to maximum batting bonus points.
His partnership with Brabner for the fifth wicket yielded 78 before Edwards took a fine running catch at square leg off Cunningham to end the stand and Brabner's fine knock for 56 with Harold Wood 219-5 off 49 overs.
Gibson was stumped by Britton in the next over also for 56 as Knapman returned to the attack and despite a Sampson straight six off Cunningham’s final over, Knapman conceded just 7 runs from the last over of the innings as Wood declared their 52 overs at a competitive but below par 242-7.
Knapman completed figures of 14-4-56-2 as he continued his fine season whilst Cunningham took 3-100 off a marathon 23 overs and Zafar 2-52 off 10.
Terry Ballard was promoted to open with Ed Buxton and got the Fives reply off to a flying start with 22 runs in the first three overs until Buxton pulled a short ball off Ikram but a bottom edge was taken behind the wicket by Hyde for 11.
However, Ballard and Neil Brathwaite took Fives to an almost unbeaten position with a superb second wicket partnership of 143 inside just 22 overs.
Ballard took the attack to the Wood bowlers as he plundered 96 from only 65 balls whilst Brathwaite was an ideal ally with an excellent innings of 66 off 96 deliveries with 11 fours.
Qureshi mixed his bowlers around but Ballard was in no mood to let them settle as he smacked three straight sixes off the Harold Wood captain and two in succession as he moved to 50 in 43 balls.
A superb leg-side clip off Brabner flew over the hedge into the adjoining farm and a fifth maximum came soon after he advanced to leg-spinner Shafique and straight drove over the scorebox as another ball was lost.
Having moved to 96 with 11 fours and the five sixes Ballard attempted to bring-up his ton with another six off Qureshi but mis-timed and Hussain took a comfortable catch at long-off to depart and leave Fives 165-2 off 25 overs.
Brathwaite drove nicely too in reaching his fifty from 78 balls but was bowled by Qureshi attempting a cut to a ball full of length and Fives were now 189-3 off 31 overs requiring just 54 off one over plus the last hour to win.
At this stage Qureshi and Shafique were able to extract plenty of turn from the pitch and another wicket soon fell as last week’s batting hero Nick Rotsey was bowled by the later without score.
However, Ballard and Brathwaite had moved Fives into such a dominant position that no risks were required and this allowed Ben Britton to play his natural game as he hit two driven sixes off Shafique before Brabner took a superb running catch at mid-on to dismiss Britton from the same bowler for 24.
Fives were now 13 runs away from victory and new batsman Phil Apps took the scores level with two massive straight sixes to his first and sixth deliveries.
That left the skipper to duly complete the win as he cut Sampson's first ball of the next over as Fives won by 5 wickets with 41 balls to spare - Edwards himself finished unbeaten on 27 and took his side home with a calm and collected innings.
Another 18 point win keeps Fives exactly half-way up the table on 106 points with half the season now played - second placed Shenfield are the visitors to The Paddock next Saturday.
