Upminster v Fives and Heronians Cricket Club Saturday 1st XI on Sat 13 Aug 2011 at 12 noon
Fives and Heronians Cricket Club Won By 4 Runs
Match report
A pulsating finish and incredible last over saw Fives and Heronians pull a win from the jaws of defeat against Upminster in SNEL division one on Saturday.
In pursuit of Fives par score of 247 all out from 49 overs, the hosts were cruising to victory at 176-1 inside the 37th over and required 8 from the last over bowled by star left-arm spinner Ryan Cunningham with still 3 wickets in hand.
To the first ball of the last over Upminster captain Oliver Peck audaciously attempted to reverse sweep Cunningham and was adjudged lbw, however, suggesting he hit the ball both umpires convened and reversed the decision.
This left 8 runs still required from the final 5 balls of the match but after his reprieve Peck could only hit a single down the ground to the next ball before Bussey missed the third ball and himself could only hit a single to the fourth ball of the over.
Peck then took another wild swing but didn’t fully connect and Cunningham took a return catch to a skier leaving six to win off the final delivery.
Having crossed, Bussey regained the strike but could only hit a single to give Fives a dramatic 4 run victory to all but end Upminster’s chance of an immediate return to the premier league.
At the start of the day Jonny Kay won the toss as the format returned to 50 overs-a-side and decided to bat - he saw his side race to 30 inside the fourth over thanks to a flurry of boundaries from Terry Ballard and a gifted 5 leg byes as Peck’s attempted throw at the bowlers end wasn’t backed-up and the ball raced to the fence.
Curtis regained revenge on Ballard after his opening over conceded 13 as another swing outside off-stump saw an edge through to Neesham in the slips as Ballard departed for 14.
Ed Buxton and young Peter Kilpatrick steadily kept the scoreboard ticking in adding 39 for the 2nd wicket until Buxton played down the wrong line and was bowled by Curtis for 22 in the 14th over.
Next up saw a 65 run partnership for the third wicket as Phil Apps increased the tempo with some powerful blows as he went to 50 from 53 balls after his ton for the 2nd XI last week.
Kilpatrick looked very mature in his 24 off 73 balls until he drove Peck to Evans at wide mid-off to depart on 134-3 in the 29th.
There then came two comical run outs as firstly Rahul Bhome pushed what looked a regulation single only to not correctly ground his bat to go for 6 and then next over Nick Rotsey suffered the ignominy of being run out without facing a ball as Apps drove hard to bowler Peck who touched the ball onto the stumps at the non-strikers end with Rotsey out of his crease.
Those two wickets put the brakes somewhat on Fives innings as the board read 161-5 off 33 overs but new father Ben Britton scored a quick 16 to move the score to 186 before Kiwi star Neesham returned to polish-off the Fives innings.
To the first ball of his last spell, Neesham had Britton caught behind before bowling Apps for a superb 71 off 81 balls (8 fours, 1 six) and then Cunningham and Kay with comprehensive yorkers as The Paddock side were dismissed for 247 with an over of their 50 not used.
Stuart Knapman’s superb cameo of 32 from 25 balls pushed the Fives total close to the 250 maximum batting points as he wonderfully drove Neesham for two sixes in one over before he holed out to Curtis from the bowling of Alan Ison having also hit three boundary fours.
Upminster started their reply off steadily with an opening stand of 59 until James Evans, who took 22 balls to get off the mark, was trapped in front by Cunningham who returned to his best form in collecting an excellent 5-43 off 10 overs.
Rahman joined Jabar at the crease and appeared to be taking their side to a comfortable victory with a second wicket partnership of 117 in 21 overs before the visitors fought their way back into the game.
Jabar, who scored a century against Fives in the league cup quarter-final in 2009, appeared to be moving to another ton until Bhome forced an edge through to Britton at the wicket to depart for 81 off 101 deliveries.
New Zealand overseas Jimmy Neesham hit three fours in one Jonny Kay over but took one risk too many as he flicked a leg-side half-volley straight to Kilpatrick at long leg to go for 15 at 192-3.
Cunningham then returned to the attack to have Ison lbw for 1 and Terry Wyatt bowled for 0 but with 8 overs remaining Upminster still looked favourites with Rahman looking assured and a further 43 runs required for a win.
Kay had Nick O’Dell caught in the deep by Bhome for 8 and then next over the match winning moment as Rahman drove fiercely off Cunningham only for Muhammad Zafar to pluck a great catch behind him at extra cover as Rahman fell for an excellent 95 off 110 balls.
Then came the final dramatic over as Fives captured an excellent 4 run win to move back to 5th in division one on 165 points and all but confirm their place in the division for next season. Orsett visit The Paddock next Saturday.
