Fives and Heronians Cricket Club Saturday 3rd XI v Chelmsford on Sat 07 May 2011 at 1.00 pm
Fives and Heronians Cricket Club Lost by 6 wickets
Match report
Fives lost the toss and were asked to bat by Chelmsford who have won this league for three consecutive seasons. We acquited ourselves very well against their opening bowlers with Mattt being Matt (destructive) and Rahul looking more and more composed with every game at the top of the order. We raced to 50 off 10 and were 75 for 2 off 15 overs, with a score of 240 plus looking achievable. However, some decent bowling by veteran slow/medium pacer Nigel Bond and spinner Neal Abhyanker combined with our middle order either getting bogged down or playing a soft shot resulted in us slipping to 115 for 5 off 30. However, Rama and the lower order did show a bit of graft and dug in and made Chelmsford earn their last few wickets. We eeked out 154, being bowled out in the 51st over, whilst trying to hit our way to 175. Sooty and Tino took the new ball and both bowled good areas, offereing no freebies and made the opening bats work for their runs. Sooty got rid of their opener but Haris Mahmood and Paul Keaney both consolidated and got Chelmsford to 90 before Rodg picked up the dangerous Mahmood. Rama after switching ends took a couple of wickets with his brisk away swingers, (showing vast promise in his first league game for the club) as any new batters to the crease were struggling with the up and down bounce. Mention to the skipper for a nonchelant one handed catch over his head at extra cover. However, in the end were 50 runs light as Chelmsford won with 15 overs of the last 20 still to bat with 4 wickets down which could and should have been 5 or 6. I think what was most dissapointing about this game was that Chelmsford were very beatable, yet despite having the platform to put them under real pressure we subsided to easily with the bat after a very good start.
