Match report Fives inserted the opposition on what misleadingly seemed to be a hard track. Both openers bowled tidily taking a wicket apiece by following the captain's perennial urging to "bowl straight." A double change swapped father Ali Hussain for son Omar and introduced Uncle Yaz in his new economical bowling style. Yaz's nagging accuracy eventually was rewarded when the batter missed a straight one while at the other end Alan Rotsey in his first bowl for nearly two years picked up a wicket in each of his first three overs. Although a couple of hard catches had gone down, Benfleet were now struggling at 99 for 6 but determined resistance raised the score slowly to 136 for 8. At this point another of Benfleet's third team players (their 3rds had no fixture) took the attack to to tiring bowling line up and with the aid of more dropped catches made a quick-fire 52 raising the final score to a healthy 202 on a low slow wicket.

In reply, Fives got off to a dreadful start with both openers gone by the third over. Worse was to follow as the side collapsed to 26 for 6 in the 12th over. Commander Greene stood firm through all the carnage and was joined by the resolute Tim Nash to double the score. When Tim was unfortunately run out and whirling Dervish Ali had perished for a brisk 7, total ignominy was avoided by an outstanding display of resolute batting by Joe Mordrick who held everything ay bay for an hour while the Commander completed an excellent fifty. Just when it seemed that at least one batting point might be salvaged from the wreckage, Benfleet's thrid team star returned to clean out the last two wickets bringing a disappointing conclusion to the first League outing of the season.
