Fives and Heronians Cricket Club Saturday 4th XI v Basildon & Pitsea on Sat 20 May 2006 at 1.30
Fives and Heronians Cricket Club Won 58 runs
Match report
Fives lost the toss and were put in to bat on a wet wicket. While not starting as badly as the previous week, a score of of 5 for 3 in the 5th over provided a certain sense of deja vu. With the skipper and Haroon riding their luck, the attack was taken to the opposition in a stand of 60 in 40 minutes. Following the skipper's departure, Haroon played with more restraint to develop the middle part oif the innings and at 117 for 5 in the 30th over and the pitch becoming less untrustworthy a decent score looked in prospect. However, the loss of 3 wickets in 5 overs for 3 runs put an entirely different complexion on the game. Fives were rescued by sensible rebuilding from old-timers Amjad and Wheeler who made steady progess before opening out to add 32 in the last 5 overs, and 65 in all - just short of the record for the 9th wicket.
Fives opening attack of Rafique, father and son, offered contrasting styles. Haroon, in his first bowl since Septembe,r initially struggled to find the accuracy and movement which characterised his bowling last year while at the other end Siraj, taking a run-up long enough to prompt comments that he must be out on a training run, bowled with considerable pace on a sluggish pitch without reward. A plea from Sooty for a short bowl to allow his creaking knees to start moving after his hour's batting was rewarded with an opening spell of 2-19 off 6 overs. Uncle Yaz again bowled very well taking a wicket in each of his spells, one thanks to a very sharp catch in the gulley by Commander Greene, himself the subject of much comment about the shade of highlights apparently applied to his eyebrows. More juggling with the bowling kept the wickets coming. With four wickets still needed off the last 10 overs, Siraj, bowling fast, full and straight, contrasted well with Sooty's wiles at the other end. Another sharp catch by the Commander removed their captain and with the last man playing no shot to Sooty to be hit on the back leg in front of middle a good win was completed with 3 overs left. Special comment must be made of Joe Mordrick, not only for copying Fred Flintoff with his new sponsored ear-rings but also for a consistently excellent fielding preformance
