Match report Fives lost the toss and were predictably invited to bat first by renowned draw specialists Southend. An opening partnership of 94 by Uncle Yaz and U13 Vinay Thackera provided a splendid start of 94 for the first wicket in 20 overs on a pich with very variable bounce. Young Vinay kept going well in his first innings for an adult team showing good promise with some classy touches before becoming the first of three stumping victims as the chase for quick runs and an early declaration got under way.

An aggressively early declaration was soon made to look ridiculous as some early width in the bowling was severely punished by Southend's ringer, a second XI batsman who had to play at home because he had an evening function. Wielding a 3lb 6oz bat he clubbed his way to 50 off 28 balls and 76 off 41in one of the most ferocious displays of long hitting anyone could remember before Uncle Yaz trimmed his bails with a good one. Yaz managed to bowl another batsmen and also hit the stumps without the bail falling and was the only bowler to consistently follow the Captain's recurring request to "bowl straight!" On a wicket with variable bounce this was even more important than usual as batsmen, worried about perishing to the dodgy bounce, threw the kitchen sink at anything wide.

Team opinion was divided as to whether Uncle Yaz was Man of the Match for his excellent 50 and taking all our wickets or Villain of the Day for dropping Southend's ringer from an enormous skier of Maddo who went for 53 off his next three overs. Kindness prevailed and a sustained effort took precedence over a solitary lapse.
