Fives and Heronians Cricket Club Midweek v South Woodford on Sun 24 Jul 2011 at 2pm
Fives and Heronians Cricket Club Lost By 8 Wickets
Match report
Fives and Heronians Dukes Essex T20 adventure for 2011 came to an abrupt end at the quarter-final stage as defending champions South Woodford showed their class to win by 8 wickets with nearly 7 overs to spare and move to finals day.
Jonny Kay won the toss and opted to bat in glorious sunshine and saw Terry Ballard blaze a rapid 29 off 12 balls which didn't include a dot ball in his innings.
Ed Buxton was the first man out bowled by South captain and Essex 2nd XI player Nick Browne for just 7 but Ballard continued his attack with 4 fours and 1 six.
However, Ballard went for one big shot too many and holed out at long-on in the 5th over as Fives reached 46-2.
Ben Britton and Phil Apps departed in the next over as they both played loose shots to the pace of Harry Shirt to be caught behind by brother Max for 1 and 0 respectively to leave the hosts in trouble at 49-4 after 6 overs.
Neil Brathwaite also found the pace of Harry Shirt too much as he ducked into a bouncer and was hit on the side of the head - after a few minutes delay Brathwaite bravely batted on but with spin then operating at both ends struggled to time the ball and was next to go for 14 off 21 balls to leave Fives 59-5 with just half the overs remaining.
Rahul Bhome and Garry Norris repaired the innings adding 37 for the 6th wicket until Richard Brown came on in the 16th over with his gentle off-spin and sent Bhome (18) packing stumped and then trapping Knapman in front lbw playing across the line for a weekend pair.
Norris fell in the next over bowled by Vadher for 22 as Fives lost three wickets with the score on 96 and leaving just two wickets and 23 balls remaining in the innings.
Bilal Ashfaq then took Fives up to a respectable score with a superb 14 ball cameo in which he score 23 and hit 2 fours and a straight six in the last over - he and Ryan Cunningham added 35 for the 9th wicket and although Ashfaq holed out in the final over, Cunningham hit a massive six himself as Fives closed their 20 overs on 132-9.
Although the final score seemed below par Ashfaq had potentially got Fives to a winning total if they could bowl and field well in the second innings.
Sadly the Paddock side put in one of their worst performances of the season as defending champs South Woodford breezed to victory in just 12.5 overs.
Cunningham (1-27 in 4) and Knapman (1-19 in 2) managed to collect a wicket each but in truth South showed professionalism to win the game which was all to evidently lacking from Fives with many mis-fields and poor bowling to add to the lack of application yet again with the bat.
Just to add salt into the wounds, South Woodford didn't provide a scorer, however, the competition rule wasn't enforced and South continued to play with 11 men - in truth South could have played with 9 men and probably would still have won the game comfortably.
Jonny Kay must now pick his team up with important league matches vs Gidea Park and Chingford in the next two weeks if his side are to avoid a relegation scrap come the end of the season.
