Match report Fives vs Brentwood match-play

Faced with a relatively dry wicket and wet outfield, we won the toss and chose to bat first. The events which were to occur were full of excitement and in the words of the Brentwood coach, both teams featured in 'the highest class colts match I have had the pleasure to watch'.

Peter Kilpatrick and Rahul Patel opened for us and it took 4 overs for opening bowler, Green to gain his first wicket, after Pete chipped one up to square leg. This made way for our new arrival Marques Ackerman who began to build a solid partnership with Rahul.

Brentwood bowled tight lines and fielded superbly, restricting us to 81 after 20 overs. Both Marques and Rahul reached their 50s in a classy manor. Rahul reaching it in 73 balls and Marques in 57 balls. Ali then came into the attack and finally broke their 123 run partnership, by having Marques caught well by Wood for 70 from 79 deliveries.

With 8 wickets in hand and 10 overs left we then started to attack, the current score standing at 151. We hit the ball to all areas of the paddock. The best shot coming from Kish who flicked one off his pads into the car park and TRAGICALLY hit Stu Knappmans van!! Rahul was instrumental in our innings and he brought up his 100 in the 35th over. Kishen and Jake helped raise the total quickly and eventually we reached our intended target of 250.

Rahul finished undefeated on 107*, showing a huge deal of maturity and class at only 14 years old.

We knew we still had a massive job to do in order to win as we had encountered many of the Brentwood players before and knew that they had some classy batters.

We got off to a bad start as the Brentwood openers capitalised on inconsistent length from our opening bowlers reaching 58 after only 12 overs without loss. Jake Poulter and Joe Samuel then bowled a few tight overs, piling on pressure, until Jake bowled Whetstone (35 from 41) and had Maxwell (19 from 42) caught behind.

Our spinners Kishen and Ross Vassani were then thrown the ball and kishen picked up his first wicket after Marques took a superb diving catch at long-off. Rishi Patel was then defeated for just 7 and the score stood at 122-4 after 27 overs. Fives then got another wicket. Horswill brought up his 50 in 53 balls with ease. He then attacked the fives bowlers and hit to all parts of the ground, with 4 huge sixes, until Brentwood needed 35 in 3 overs and 3 wickets in hand. With his team mates desperately trying to get Horswill on strike, tension was beginning to build but we remained calm. After getting hit for six with his 2nd ball of the penultimate over Jake figured out the right length and bowled tighter. 15 with 2 wickets in hand was required from the last over and Peters consistent yorker length persisted preventing Horswill from hitting him. However, after a wide and a 4 the game was much closer than anticipated. With 10 from 5 balls required Pete clean bowled Horswill for 106 from 79 deliveries. He then took the final wicket once again clean bowling the Brentwood number 11, ending a nail-biting game between two strong sides and with Five as victors!

Horswill was the highlight of Brentwood's perormance with 106.

We produced a faultless performance with the bat and Rahul was the highlight of our innings with an unbeaten 107*. However, with the ball there are clear improvements to be made in order for us to progress in the competition. Overall, a satisfying performance.
Hats off to Brentwood for a great performance and we wish them good luck to for the rest of the competition.
