Match report On a horrendously miserable day at the Paddock, F&H 1st XI got the upper hand of a rain affected draw with Gidea Park & Romford on Saturday. Winning the toss and electing to field, Terry Ballard took the early wicket of Essex stalwart Barry Hyam, well caught behind by Simon Fitzgerald, but were then put to the sword by Romford’s aggressive opening bat Krishnan, who scored a quickfire 24 before being dismissed by Brenden Smith (one of 6 F&H teenagers on show).
Churchill and Davey then put together a very positive partnership that was only broken with the introduction of Jeremy Mordrick into the attack. Mordrick trapped Churchill with his very first delivery and as part of four consecutive maidens should have also dismissed Davey, who was put down after giving the simplest of chances to Gary Edwards at square leg. After this setback, the Fives attack stuck well to their task against a strong batting line-up and was able to limit the visitors to a total of 229. The veteran Mordrick was again the pick of the bowlers taking 4 for 46 from his 16 overs.
In reply Fives lost Edwards and Fitzgerald early and when the rain came their score stood at 5 for 2. After a lengthy delay the game continued and Ballard and aussie star Ben Maher put together a magnificent partnership to ensure Fives came out on top, finishing on 139 for 4. Ballard was unbeaten on 59 (his second consecutive league fifty) and Maher was extremely unlucky to be dismissed with less than an over remaining for 63.
