Chingford v Fives and Heronians Cricket Club Saturday 1st XI on Sat 12 May 2012 at 12.30 pm
Fives and Heronians Cricket Club Won by 31 runs

Match report F&HCC got their 2012 league campagin off to the perfect start with a 31 run win away at Chingford, a ground where they have struggled in recent years. New skipper Ben Britton won the toss and elected to bat first, a bold move considering all the rain we have had. He was backing his players to get a solid score on the board and play to the strengths of the side in the bowling department.

As it happened, Britton's game plan was spot on, as Fives scored a very competitive 190-8 on a slow pitch, and bowled excellently to tie Chingford's batsmen down as they chased the score.

In the first innings, Gary Edwards and Phil Apps played very sensibly after losing Terry Ballard in the first over, Apps' 33 an especially impressive knock, worth 50 or 60 on a flat pitch and crucial in the context of the whole game. The traditional Fives collapse then ensued, as we lost 4 wickets for 20 runs, and staring down the barrel at 114-6. Chalky White and Rahul Bhome then started the recovery, before White kicked on and ended up scoring an invaluable 41 not out. The game was very much in the balance at tea.

Early wickets were going to be crucial if Fives were to stamp their authority on the game in the field, and the seamers did not disappoint. Jamie Porter, Stuart Knapman and Waqas Javaid bowled tight lines and did not give the batsmen much to hit at all. Porter always looked dangerous and Javaid clean bowled star batsman Butt. When the danger man Taylor was run out by Britton, Chingford were really struggling and Fives 2 spinners, Rahul Bhome and Ryan Cunningham, were able to turn the screw and keep the run rate rising as Nick Shawyer and Skipper McMurray tried to rebuild the innings. In the end the target proved beyond Chingford's reach as Porter returned to clean up Shawyer, McMurray hit White to Ballard in the covers, and the tail struggled to keep up with the required rate. Porter claimed his 4th wicket by bowling Daniels to finish with an impressive 4-24 off 9.1 overs, and Chingford were all out for 159 with 5 balls to go.

A good start, especially with 3 games rained off, but still much to work on for Britton's men. Hainault and Clayhall visit the Paddock next Saturday.
