Horndon-on-the-Hill v Fives and Heronians Cricket Club Saturday 4th XI on Sat 26 May 2012 at 1.00 pm
Fives and Heronians Cricket Club Won Fives won by 107 runs
Match report
What a game !!!
Fives played with only 8 players at a ground where the outfield was so grassy that on occasions, the ball would disappear in the grass as a result of a sweetly timed rolling shot. We won the toss and elected to bat first with Veteran uncle Yaz and Saqib opened the batting. The target was set at 180-200 runs by the skipper. We started steadily and scored only 37 runs in the first 10 overs. Next 12 overs saw the total reach 150 mark with Saqib hitting the ball around the park with great ease. Yaz (35 runs) supported Saqib very well by continuously rotating the strike. It was probably the record opening partnership for the 4th XI between the two. Saqib went on to get a beautifully struck 160 (18 4s and 9 6s) and made opposition loose 3 balls in the process due to his massive 6s over point and cover boundary. Roger and Raheel later supported the cause and kept accelerating. We declared in 39th over to try and win the game.
With only 6 fielders in the field, it was a difficult task to set the right field. Also there was no recognised keeper in the team and the task had to be shared between Saqib and Haider. But Both Roger and Raheel ensured that the fielders weren't needed at all. Opposition lost 4 wickets in the first 4 overs and went straight into defensive mode. Uriel and Nick bowled beautifully but couldn't break opposition's defenses. So the captain kept introducing Raheel and Roger back for shorter spells and they both kept delivering. Roger needed to leave early and made a deal that he will get the team 2 wickets after 6pm as a condition for him to leave. He duly delivered leaving us reduced to 7 men and 2 wickets needed for a win.
Raheel finished the job for us and ended with 6 wickets and targeted off stump. Roger ended up with 4 wickets and targeted middle stump for all. We hit the stumps 9 times and got 1 LBW.
Great performance by the team. We won a game whereas initially we were hoping to maximise points and limit the damage due to shortage of players. Believe it or not, towards the end Chris volunteered to field close to the stumps in catching position to put pressure on the batsmen. Fortunately no ambulance was called. Well done Chris.
The man of the match is difficult to decide but it goes to Saqib for taking away the game from opposition within the first 20 overs of the match.
