Fives and Heronians Cricket Club Saturday 4th XI v Gidea Park & Romford on Sat 06 Sep 2003 at 1.00
Fives and Heronians Cricket Club Won 7 wkts
Match report
Having won the toss Fives opted to bowl first and risk deteriorating conditions on a very dry pitch. Fives rapid opening "A" attack (Adam and Amrit) produced consternation in the opposition ranks but no wickets as the ball flew past the edge and over the stumps. The introduction of Delboy induced a top edge sweep well held at short fine leg to remove their best batsman and start an attritional period where the Gidea Park skipper hopped about nudging, nurdling and cursing the pitch sufficiently to persuade the rest of this side that a tricky wicket was nigh on unplayable. A tight first spell from our third "A" Adrain of 1 for 9 from 5 overs was followed by a slightly more wayward than usual Bob Speller struggling with an undulating run-up (although how anyone with a three step run-up can have a problem remains a mystery!) Park's skipper eventually found his touch and cluped a few, but too late to have a real impact. Delboy wheeled away steadily to reap 4-47 off 21, despite a number of missed catches and stumpings, helping to restrict our target to a reasonable 188.
Makeshift opener Amrit struck the ball superbly to reach 14 off 8 balls while a sober Lee Hilton kept out the swinging ball. A brief cameo (well, very brief, really) from Slam set the stage for a period of consolidation by the Commander and Lee to create a platform for a dazzling maiden century from Adrain Palmer. While Greenie managed to get off the mark with a single from his 32nd ball Adrian reached 50 from 37 and went on to raise his 100 with a six over midwicket finishing with 112* from 74 balls. His stand with Steve was a new record of 152 with Steve making another valuable contribution in his best year with the bat for some time. Fives win was completed with 16 overs remaining despite the captain inadvertently delaying the second innings start by 20 minutes while returning home for a contact lens with the new ball in his car.
