Match report Fives and Heronians over 40,s under 16's won the Jeff Rodriques Trophy after a hard fought win against a competitive South Woodford team. SW won the toss and elected to bat which was the obvious thing to do on a scorching hot day at the Paddock.
John Samuel and James Sibley shared the new ball against a very attacking opening pair who both retired by the 15th over with the score on 83. Fives turned the screw over the next 25 over’s restricting SW to 205 from their 40 over’s with Jake Poulter the pick of the bowling with 4 for 18 from 6 over’s, Mark Wheeler (Sooty) also impressive with a tidy 6 over spell taking one wicket.
Fives started off the innings in careful fashion before loosing Joe Samuel in the 6th over. Gary Edwards soon found his timing and played some quality shots before he retired as he reached 30. Hugo Blogg batted very sensibly against SW dangerous spinners ensuring he saw them off but also taking runs when possible, this made it easier for the later batsman to play freely. Kish and Jake scored useful quick runs before both being caught. Gary Norris gave F&H the edge with a quick fire 30 which left F&H requiring 40 from 8 over’s. Hugo then retired to leave John Samuel Steve Poulter and James Sibley to score quickly or get out to get the retired batsman back in which they all did but it was Mark Wheeler coming in at 11 who hit Gary Neicho for a couple of boundaries to seal the win that on the day F&H definitely deserved.
It has been really enjoyable captaining the side on a Sunday and we have a 100% record. Everybody has been actively involved in all the games and we managed to play them all in the right spirit whilst being competitive. We really have some good youngsters coming through and the future looks rosy for F&H.
