Fives and Heronians Cricket Club Saturday 1st XI v Southend on Sea on Sat 12 May 2007 at 1 pm
Fives and Heronians Cricket Club Won by 5 Wickets
Match report
fives managed to pick up from where they left off last week with a well deserved victory down at the fort we call the paddock.
Ballard won the toss and put the visitors in which proved to be a crucial point in the match. The fives opening bowlers White and Kay bowled extremely tight and managed to get the ball in good areas early on. Kay struck first removing khan caught and bowled with a ball jumping off a length were khan could only fend off straight back to him. Chalky probably deserved more for his afternoons work and only managed to pick up 1 wicket, Wathon caught behind on 9. Some "interesting" running between the wickets managed to gift Fives and important wicket as Southend looked as if they were beginning to get a partnership going. Probably the quietest bowler so far this year Tom "Chuckie" Clark bowled his usual "bowling machine like" right arm over and picked up four good wickets which really made the day even worse for southend who were struggling on 84 for 6. Luckily the weather only distrupted the game twice and we managed to get a full game in especially as the fives boys really rated their chances on winning the game.
The Fives openers Edwards and Stevens took the field and begin the chase for the home side. After some excellent bowling from the two Southend openers who frustrated the Fives pair; Stevens fell for 9 being bowled by Wathon.(probably for the best as he was still counting his balls from an earlier delivery)
Jackson fell for 0 and Ballard followed him in the same over. Ben Britton came onto the scene using his baseball like technique and smashed the Southend bowlers all over the park. Britton tried to catapult another ball into the field but was unfortunatly caught on the boundary off the bowling of Wathon for 68.
Chris carved a wide-ish ball straight to third man on the boundary which he was not too pleased about. Struggling "batsmen" Josh Peters was next in and after a few play and misses managed to find the middle of the bat. Edwards and Peters played the patient game for the next few overs and managed to pick up the odd run here and there. Fives needed 27 runs off the last 5 overs for victory, and Peters managed to clear the rope twice and clip the winning runs through mid wicket to take fives passed the finishing line.
