Match report London & East England Final v Betteshanger (Kent) - Fives lost the toss and were asked to bat 1st. It was a struggle early on as Betteshanger opening bowlers made good use of the new ball. Off 5 overs Fives were 28 - 2 and in deep trouble with TB & Norro back in the hutch. Ben & Gary then picked up the pace & gave the innings some much needed momentum. Gary retired in the 7th over as did Ben soon after with a brilliant quickfire 25. Pete & JK continued the good work and at 98 - 2 off 10 overs Fives were looking good for a big last 2 overs. However, Pete was dismissed which was then followed by 3 needless run outs as the innings ended with a limp with 109 all out. A disappointing end but a score Fives would have settled for given the poor start.
In reply, JK bowled with his usual economical self picking up an early wicket. JK was well supported by Pete / TB & Gary as Betteshanger although picking up 3's where they could struggled to get on top of the bowling. At the half way stage the game was in the balance with Betteshanger 61 - 3. The game continued to ebb & flow and with 2 overs remaining 21 were required with 2 wickets in hand. JK bowled a good tight over conceding just 6 leaving 15 off the last to be bowled by Gary. Dot ball , 2 , stumping off wide, 3, dot ball meant 9 required off last 2 balls. Surely Fives had it won…….but no. A 6 off the penultimate ball meant only 3 runs were required off the last ball. Gary bowled a good last delivery which was drilled back to him on the floor. He made a good stop but the ball crept from his grasp and diverted to TB who also couldn’t pick up cleanly by which time the batsman had scrambled a 2 for a tie and a Betteshanger victory as they lost less wickets than Fives.
An agonising end to a great game with 2 very evenly matched sides. Betteshanger now advance to the National Finals at Lords on Sunday 17th March.
