Match report On a blustery June afternoon Fives won the toss and elected to bat first. James Sibley was asked to open the batting with Hugo but when he realised his batting kit was in his girlfriend’s car plan B was introduced. Jon Thurston (JT) making a comeback after about ten years out of the game decided he was up for opening. He looked the perfect Sunday opener with his faded brown\white pads with buckles and long sleeve fives and Heronians shirt from the 90's. Against two 13 year old openers JT smashed two singles to fine leg before trying to play an aggressive cover drive over cow corner to lose his middle stump. James Sibley was now padded up and marched to the middle before marching back two balls later. Geof Emannuel(39),Hugo(83) and Jake(35) kept the total ticking over nicely before all departing and leaving the last 5 overs to Paul Harvey and Dave Pugson to get the total to 246-6 from 40 0vers,Paul scoring fifty not out from 27 balls and Pugo a classy 8.
After a splendid tea Fives opened the bowling with Greg Summers and James Sibley, James made the early breakthrough removing their dangerous opener with a sharp caught and bowled. Fives kept the pressure on and all bowlers kept the Upminster batting in check. Portia Blogg bowled a great spell and was unlucky not to get rewarded with a wicket. Two out of this world catches by the captain was the pinnacle of the day, the youngster looking on like star struck teenagers. Fives managed to keep Upminster to 184 from their allotted overs and win by 62 runs.
