Woodford Wells v Fives and Heronians Cricket Club U18 T20 on Tue 09 Jul 2013 at 18:00
Fives and Heronians Cricket Club Won by 5 runs

Match report In a hard fought battle, which could’ve gone either way, Fives eventually triumphed over local rivals Woodford Wells!

Winning the toss and electing to bat, Fives recovered from the loss of an early wicket, with Pete Kilpatrick and Kishen Patel setting the tone in what proved to be a high scoring game. With the departure of KP, Jake Poulter kept the momentum going, and together with PK, played some fine shots! At one stage, a score of around 200 was on the cards but Wells fought back and with the loss of wickets, the innings slowed and Fives were left ruing the fact that they hadn’t batted the full 20 overs. Their total looked to be 20 runs short on what would normally be considered a par score on this pitch.

Following a few well chosen words by the skipper at half time, Fives were left in no doubt about what was required and what the consequences would be if they failed!

The Wells innings started in a similar vein, with the early loss of their skipper to a brilliant, low catch by George M-R. With others batting positively and a great knock by George Styles, they were keeping up with the required run-rate and looked favourite to win the game with overs to spare. After 16 overs, and on 141, needing 25 to win, Pete returned for his second spell and clean bowled Styles who was on 88. Off the remainder of his over, Wells only managed to score 1 run!

The tension started to build! With the Samuel ‘Chuckle’ brothers offering encouragement from the outfield, pressure on the new batsman started to tell and Jake conceded just 7 off the 18th over. Wells needed 17 off the last 2! Pete duly obliged with a wicket off the first ball of the penultimate over, but with a Dil-scoop off the last ball, it meant that Jake had to bowl the last over with just 9 runs required for the win and with 5 wickets in hand!

In the last over, Wells managed a single off the first ball. On the second, an attempted run to the keeper saw Hugo throw down the stumps, bringing a new batsman to the crease and more importantly, a dot ball! Jake, who now had ice running in his veins, held his nerve and 3 dot balls followed, resulting in Fives being victorious!

A fine team effort that was brilliantly supported…. thanks to everyone who came along to watch what turned out to be a brilliant advertisement for T20 cricket !
