Match report
The fourth's opened their season on a very soft pitch at OLd Chigs by winning the toss and inserting the opposition to ensure all the bowlers had a good work out. Mark Speller's first overs for eight months were a little rusty with a number of exocets clearing the keepers head by a safe margin. At the other end, John Walters first bowl for two years was also slightly wayaward and both were rested after 4 overs. New U14 recruit Adrian Palmer used a natural action well and turned in an accurate spell of 5 overs for 6 runs while at the other end John's elder brother had his first bowl for several years and secured the breakthrough when Maddo snaffled the first of two slip catches. Subsequent spells ny Speller and Walters were much improved and hold out hopes of a good season to come. Maddo wheeled away for a modest (for him) unbroken 13 overs to pick up 3-44. During this spell keeper Nash was unfortunately struck hard on the head by the batsman chasing one of Derek's leg-side specials and had to be taken to hospital for several stiches. Whipps Cross excelled themselves and had him stitched up only 5 hoyrs after the incident.Fives pursuit of 142-9 from 50 overs was op[pened by Snapper Franbklin, the stand in keeper and Joe Rudkin. Biothe played well before Rudkin edged a good one to first slip. The jet-lagged skipper groped around unconvincingly for half an hour and was followed by the injured James Foley who preformed well despite a damaged wrist and followed Clive to a 50 and then retired hurt leaving Commander Greene to guide young Adrian to a comfortable win by 7 wickets with 14 overs to spare. It will not be so easy next week when the League starts......
