Fives and Heronians Cricket Club Sunday Cup XI v Gidea Park & Romford (ES rnd 1) on Sun 06 May 2007 at
Fives and Heronians Cricket Club Won by 2 wickets
Match report
Fives lost the toss on an overcast day, and were put into field. Johnny Kay and Chris White opened the bowling, putting the ball in excellent areas, both being rewarded with 2 early wickets apiece. Tom Clark then replaced Chris White in the 11th over, following his suit and bowling excellent areas, and doing plenty with the ball. "Chucky" was extremely unlucky not to have taken a wicket, and fully deserved one at least. After 21 overs, the GPR score was 25-4, with not one boundary scored, Johnny Kay returning excellent figures of 10-3-11-2. Then Josh Peters came on, needless to say GPR's first boundary came in his first over with Cider Sutton dispatching him through midwicket for four. Dan Platt then came on and replaced Tom Clark from the pavilion end. For a few overs GPR looked like they were getting back on track for a good score, before Platt removed Goldstone for 19 ending a partnership of 51. Wickets fell with regularity, Platt picking up 3 and Peters taking 1 (cleaning up Cider Sutton), both finishing off their spells but proving rather expensive. Clark (Chucky) and White (Chalky) came on to finish the job, but the lower batsman proved too stubborn, picking up some more valuable runs in aid of their team’s total. Chucky was again unlucky as a catch went down off his bowling, so it was down to Chalky to finish off the tail and end up with excellent figures of 4-23, and Chucky with 0-17 (maybe next week Clarky.) GPR finished their innings in the 48th over for 157. This was a superb effort by the Fives bowlers and fielders.
Fives started off their reply with the usual opening partnership of Stevens and Edwards, and looked comfortable for the first few overs until Gary was caught behind off the bowling of Zaeem. Beckett was then removed LBW by the same bowler and then Porks flayed at a wide one and was also caught behind off of the bowling of Zaeem, leaving Fives struggling at 43-3. Dan was playing the anchor role and looking very comfortable until he played a ball down the keeper’s throat and was out for 36. The worst part of the day then followed, as Cider Sutton "steamed in", bowling Chris White and then getting Josh Peters caught behind, much to the delight of his carrotness and his GPR teammates. Worse was to follow as Ballard skied one which looked to be going for six, but then hit the hill and stopped. Macca, noticing that the ball wasn't going to go for a boundary, decided to run as hard as he could, but Ballard did not hear his call in the wind and didn't run, leaving Macca a long way short of his crease. This left Fives in an awful state of 81-7 at the drinks break. Rob's wicket brought the reliable Kay (A.K.A pube head). to the crease Johnny did his job very well, supporting TB in a partnership worth 41 (of which he contributed a massive 4!!) before getting bowled by an inswinging yorker. This then brought the techincally gifted Chucky to the crease with just over 30 still needing to be scored but only 2 wickets in hand, and with the not so technically gifted Platt coming in at 11. Chucky was given instructions to do exactly what Kay had done, and let Ballard play his natural free flowing game (swinging the bat as hard as he can)
The pressure was somewhat relieved when Cider Sutton decided it would be a good idea to bowl short to Ballard and the end result was his over costing 19, with fives only needing 5 to win with 15 overs left.
Ballard then dispatched 2 balls for 4 in the next over and ended up with a sensational, chanceless and match winning 80*, and for Fives to win by 2 wickets, with a relieved Platt standing on the sidelines thankful that he didn't have to bat. The middle order collapse should not hide the fact that for probably 80% of this game Fives outplayed a premier league side and fully deserved the victory. They should be looking to take their good early season form into the league that starts this Saturday at home to newly-promoted Southend, and in the next round of the National Cup against another old adversary, Wanstead, on Sunday.
