Hainault & Clayhall v Fives and Heronians Cricket Club Saturday 2nd XI on Sat 31 May 2014 at 13:00
Fives and Heronians Cricket Club Won by 7 wkts
Match report
On a pleasant but cloudy afternoon Fives went into the match with a weakened team (on paper) but with a positive attitude. The pitch was in good condition but with a bit of moisture in it. However it looked a good track. N Brathwaite captaining on the day had mixed feelings about deciding whether to bat, but the decision was taken out of his hands as he proceeded to lose the toss. Hainault elected to bat.
Fives took the field with 9 men as 2 were caught up in the Saturday afternoon traffic. Great opening spells by Babor and A Mirza restricted Hainault to 28-1 off the first 10. The fielding was enthusiastic with young Josh Richards and "young" N Brathwaite guarding the offside. The openers were replaced by R Brathwaite & Richards who both continued the good work. Brathwaite keeping it tight from one end whilst young Richards wheeled away, with his leg breaks, from the other end. He caused havoc to all the batsmen, with the "ball of the day" cleaning up Hainault captain M Dar. Richards continued bowling well and finished with a haul of 6-60. a great effort. Fives did not drop a catch and managed to contain Hainault to an under par 184ao.
Brathwaite was happy but knew the game was not won. N. Brathwaite & Richards opened and set about the Hainault attack. Richards playing fluently whilst Brathwaite played some scorching drives. The target was looking comfortable until Richards (13) was run out going for a 3rd run and Brathwaite (26) were dismissed in quick succession. The latter departing with the score on 41-2 off 8 overs. This brought F Mirza & OJ to the crease. They proceeded to consolidated over the next 10 overs then upped the tempo. OJ in particular was playing beautiful square drives and was particularly harsh on anything over-pitched. At drinks Fives needed 85. Mirza who struggled for fluency up to this point unlocked the shackles and showed an array of shots that were missing earlier in the innings. OJ continued batting with purpose and hit a fine 67 before departing with only 20 runs needed. Mirza went on to score 57n.o. with Doig 11n.o. seeing us home. Some sensible batting secured an excellent victory.
Well done lads, let's have more of the same in weeks to come.
