Match report This was a fantastic win for the 4th team who only had nine players! We were bottom but one in the league and playing a team from the top half. Life was further complicated when four players arrived AFTER the scheduled start time! Having been put in to bat we had to persuade an opposition spectator to umpire as we had two batting, two padded up and only one person to umpire.
One of the Orset opening bowlers was from their second team and only playing because his son was in the side. He removed Joe Coghlan and then Andre, the fourth team's most prolific batsman, in a superb opening spell of 6 overs 2 for 6. Rob Williams and Tom Kelsey then dug in with great determination, hoping the missing players would turn up before we were all out. When Tom went for a composed 12 from 59 balls the obdurate Rotsey dug in for an hour, first with Rob and then with the late-arriving Roger Brathwaite. Roger was the only player on either side to bat with freedom on a slow and variable pitch and was unluckily bowled off bat and pad. By now Atul and Viraj had arrived and entered into a long partnership putting on 48 in 19 overs, both playing extremely well. At the 52 over point we had only reached 115 and so batted on, much to the annoyance of Orsett on a very hot afternoon. When Atul was last out for 32 made in 100 minutes Fives had reached only 135.

Defending such a modest total required maximum commitment by bowlers and fielders, and everyone rose to the occasion. After the first two overs, both maidens, Atul held a sharp catch at slip off Roger who then bowled their number 3 in his next over to make the score 5 for 2 off 5 overs and give us some hope of collecting the odd bowling bonus point. At the other end, Andre was building pressure with his first 5 overs only going for 4 runs. After 16 overs Orsett had reached only 35 for 3 as Andre struck with a neat catch by 'keeper Viraj. At the start of the last 20 overs, Orsett needed 89, having only made 47 off the first 18 overs. After some discussion we decided to keep the pressure on with Roger running in hard for another 5 overs - a great feat of stamina on a vey hot day (when the skipper collapsed with cramp caused by dehydration.) Andre was replaced by young Tom Kelsey whose first 4 overs at the start of the 20 only went for 8 runs. With Roger keeping it tight at the other end, this pushed the target to 66 off 11 overs and Orsett started to take chances. Andre replaced Roger and got their skipper with another good catch by Atul at backward point, and Fives were in with a chance of a win for the first time. When Tom tired, Malveer replaced him and finally dislodged their opener for 40 made in over two hours. Roger came back and got their slogger very well caught by Joe Coghlan leaving a target of 12 off 4 overs with 3 wickets in hand, which should bave been comfortable. A couple more wickets meant 4 were required from the last over with the last pair together. After a scambled bye, the 4th ball was snicked wide of the keeper and Malveer galloped in from fine leg. Orsett tried to steal a second run which would have levelled the scores with 2 balls remaining. Malveer's throw was excellent and Viraj, who kept well throughout, made no mistake with the run out.

This was a fantastic win against all odds with every single member of the team contributing.
