Match report Fives had the upper hand against local rivals Loughton for most of the game but did not quite have enough in the locker to win. Fives batted sensibly in the first fifteen overs against tight bowling in bowler friendly conditions. Once the ball lost its shine Fives lead by skipper Neil Brathwaite and young Matthew Erasmus (South African exchange student from Forest School) took to the Loughton bowling with gusto, picking off the bad balls with ease, with Mathew playing some delightful drives through the covers (very similar to ex Fives play Phil Apps). At drinks we were 97 for 1 and well set but with the dismissal of Neil for a well constructed 49, regular wickets fell thereafter, and Fives finished on 218 for 9 off 52 overs which was a competitive score and definitely would have taken considering the conditions at the start of play.
Fives fancied there chances of winning at tea but despite an early wicket for Roger, Loughtons second wicket put on a 70 run partnership which took time out of the game and once broken by the returning leg spin of KD, Fives scented blood with James Mckay, playing with a new freedom without the captaincy, the pick of the bowlers. Needing 3 wickets in the last 10 overs, with the run rate putting the game out of Loughtons reach, Fives ran out of overs and ideas towards the end. A game which we could and should have won but never quite looked like doing.
