Fives and Heronians Cricket Club Saturday 4th XI v Hainault & Clayhall on Sat 31 May 2008 at 1.00
Fives and Heronians Cricket Club Lost
Match report
We won the toss and elected to bowl first. The wicket was very wet after all the rain during the week and never really dried out. It was still a good playing surface though. We also had the luxury of two qualified umpires standing.
Hainault batted well early on achieving 49 for no wicket after 20 overs. They moved on to 73 for 2 after 30 overs setting themselves up for last 20 overs thrash. However, a very tight spell of bowling followed from Mark and Mohsin/Yaz as we restricted them to 108 for 6 after 46 overs. The last 6 overs saw them move the score on to 155 for 9. These additional runs proved cruical and if catches had been held then H&C would not have scored 125.
In reply, we achieved a steady start scoring 44 runs off the 1st 16 overs. The next 25 runs were achieved with the loss of 6 wickets though largely due to poor shot selection (play across the line stuff). The skipper then steadied the ship and saw the score thru to 109 for 7 with just over 5 overs remaining and hopefully respectability (a draw with 125 on the scoreboard would have been a good result to-day!). However, a very optimistic single saw the skipper depart and the rest of the innings just folded an over or so later.
H&C were deserved winners as they were better with the bat, the ball and in the field. However, we need to learn to maximise the points obtained particuarly in the first half of the season by batting with more application and determination plus working harder in the field. Clearly after a performance like that changes will need to be made for next week.
