Fives and Heronians Cricket Club Academy XI v South Woodford 5th XI on Sat 24 May 2008 at 1.00
Fives and Heronians Cricket Club Won 4 wkts
Match report
The inaugural League fixture for the Academy Squad started well with winning the toss and inserting South Woodford. Faisal and Michael started well with bounce from a hard deck and movement in the blustery conditions. Michael was unlucky to have a sharp chance put down at slip while Faisal enjoyed the benefit of an awkward catch by the skipper. Wickets fell steadily when Vinay replaced Michael to bowl two excellent spells of straight and full deliveries bringing him four bowled and two LBW's. Clearly three seasons with Rotsey in his ear - "Bowl straight, he misses and you hit" - had finally brought results! Dismissing South Woodford for only 145 was an excellent all round effort.
Fives batting was opened by the brothers Lloyd, in partnership for the first time. The new ball again moved and bounced but was met with positive strokeplay. Ben and Jake both departed to lifters and while Commander Greene dropped anchor at one end, Ronnie perished to an excellent gully catch off a full-blooded cut and Arun dragged one on to his stumps. What had looked a simple target began to assume new significance and a period of consolidation was required. Saul, in his first innings of the season began in cautious mode and gradually settled to play some well timed shots while jogging the odd leisurely two at the Commander's pace. When, Steve was finally a bit too leisurely with the running, Faisal came and went with one flash for 4 leaving an awkward 20 to win with 6 down. Saul continued to bat calmly to finish with a well crafted 44 not out to ensure there were no upsets.
This was a good team performance, particularly when Stuart was suffering so badly with asthma that we were really playing with ten men. We hope he will feel better next week.
