Match report Fives won the toss and batted first on a hard but slightly cracked track providing good pace but slightly variable bounce. While Vinay played himself in carefully, Haider stroked the ball around with increasing confidence before chipping to square leg. A century partnership by Vinay and Adam Peters, hot foot from his morning shift at the David Lloyd centre, put us in a strong position. Following words from the captain at the drinks interval, both batsmen played with more aggression and Vinay stepped up the pace with excellent running between the wickets. A final total of 214 - 4 in 47 overs could have been reached earlier if this pattern of running had been used throughout by all the first three batters, providing more overs for us to bowl out the opposition.

In reply, the recently injured Jack Jerrom opened the bowling with good pace and aggression and was unlucky to have sharp chances dropped at third slip and in the gully. At the other end Arun Moorthy again demonstrated his knack for taking wickets when a truly awful ball was hit to Haider who made no mistake. Thereafter, Arun bowled well following the captain's urging to bowl and full and straight and hitting the stumps regularly. A good stand for the 4th wicket resisted several bowling changes and only when the somewhat reluctant Alex McKie was pressed into bowling some leggers did the breakthrough occur when Alex removed both Harlow batters. Arun returned to warp up the tail in classic style with one that trimmed the leg bail followed by a middle stump yorker to the last man finishing with 5 for 28 off 8 to secure the win with 14 overs remaining. The 20 points moves the Academy Squad to second in the table as we approach the half way point - a very commendable achievement by a young team in its first season.
