Fives and Heronians Cricket Club Won by 12 runs

Match report Fives lost the toss and were inserted by Hutton on an absolute road of a wicket. Uncle Yaz and Mikey got us off to a racing start with five 4's in the first three overs before Hutton's attack became more disciplined and put a brake on the scoring which led to Mikey giving a sharp c&b to David Franklin. When Yaz and Awais departed to successive balls the captain decided to counter-attack with a run a ball 34. His depaarture led to three quick wickets and a rapdiy receding target of 240 off 40 overs. A good tortoise-and-hare stand followed with Thuva providing the fireworks while Uriel held steady. A late flurry by Pirak and Nigel took us to 236 after 41 overs and another early declaration.
Breaking with convention, Fives opened with Portia's very accurate leg breaks at one end and Pirak's pace at the other. He bowled some excellent deliveries as well as some wild ones, which was only to be expected in his first bowl for a year. Portia, having caused all sorts of problems on a wicket offering turn and bounce, made the breakthrough when dad Nigel snaffled a sharp chance behind the stumps. Clive's stubborn resistance was ended by Jai's left arm wrist spin and we began to work through the Hutton batting. Very aggressive field settings leaked cheap runs but frequent bowling changes brought wickets while keeping Huton in the chase. With 30 wanted off the last five overs and wickets in hand, Hutton kept going but were eventually cleaned up by Thuva and Uncle Yaz who secured a smart stumping by Nigel off the last ball of the penultimate over to win the game and set up a League Championship deciding match against Belhus next week.
This was an excellent all round performance with every member of the team contributing. Special mention to Yaz with 4 for 32 and solid runs at the top of the order, to Nigel (who at breakfast time on Saturday thought he would be a spectator) with two catches and a stumping to win the game, and to Thuva for his fast runs when we needed acceleration and a couple of clean bowled wickets.
