Warriors v Fives and Heronians Cricket Club Indoor League Over 40s on Fri 16 Jan 2004 at 21.00
Fives and Heronians Cricket Club Lost 36 runs
Match report
Warriors elected to bat and started positively knocking 23 runs off the first two overs. Then suddenly in the space of 12 balls they went from 29 – 0 to 38 – 4. Two good run outs followed by two good catches by Neil and Jon meant that the unbeaten Warriors were now in unknown territory. However, an excellent 90 run 5th wicket partnership between skipper Ash (45) and Kamel (52*) saw Warriors score 144 – 5 in 12 overs. They certainly hit the ball very hard and I was glad to be behind the net scoring however, the type of ball used in this competition does favour that approach to batting.
In reply, the required run rate was just over 12 runs per over, a difficult chase given the quality of the bowling but there was nothing to lose. 11 off the 1st over, 15 off 2 overs, 29 off 3 overs, 37 off 4 overs, 45 off 5 overs then both Neil Braithwaite (38) and Jon Thurston (29*) retired having scored 25. We were now 60 – 0 off 6 overs, which, exactly matched the Warriors total after 6 overs but they had lost 4 wickets. Although the asking rate was now 14 runs per over but we had laid the solid foundation required. However, in the next 2 overs we could only score 11 runs against some tight Warriors bowling. You could see the frustration etched on Steve “Ingatestone Station” Poulter’s face as the game started to slide away. Although we smashed 31 runs in the last 3 overs to score 108-5 we ended up losing by 36 runs.
Congratulations go to the Warriors on another success but it could have been oh so different if we had broken their 5th wicket partnership a little earlier. This match was a good advert for cricket in Essex i.e. some quality performances and a game played in the right spirit that was enjoyed by all.
Despite finishing 3rd in our group and having to go through the play-offs (we played 9 matches in total!) we still managed to reach the final so the structure of the competition has our full support. We now look forward to the summer ahead hoping that we can build on this success in the U15s/Over 40s competition.
A big thank you to Vicki for organising the competition at the Essex Indoor School.
