Match report The first match of the league season for the 3rd XI, under new captain Mikey Thompson, after the previous two were cancelled. On paper this was a strong 3rd XI with a good mix of experience and younger talent. Fives won the toss and decided to put Harold Wood into bat on a sunny day at Harold Wood Park. Faizan Yousaf and Abbas Mirza opened the bowling with Abbas, in particular, keeping a stranglehold on the scoring; Abbas bowled 8 overs straight conceding just 12 runs. At one point I think I actually saw him smile!
Excellent Fives bowling was backed up by some excellent fielding, with James Harley impressing with the gloves. Ben Kearin, Harry Allen, and Ian Goddard were particularly sharp in the field. Fives soon had Harold Wood in trouble and Roger Braithwaite (when he finally arrived) showed no mercy as he mopped up 3 wickets in quick succession. Wickets also for Mirza (who deserved more), Pratt (who bowled with hostility), Saunders (who looked his age), and Allen (who didn't).
After an excellent tea, especially enjoyed by the bowlers, Fives set upon completing an easy victory with Rohan Qureshi, with an excellent fifty, and Harry Allen knocking off the runs in next to no time.
All in all, an excellent and encouraging start to the season. It would have been nice to have batted longer and chased down 250 to win, but a win is a win, and new captain Mikey was delighted with his team's attitude and approach to the game.
