Match report Fives grinded out a well earned draw against last year's league champion's Saffron Walden in last Saturday's league campaign opener. Winning the toss and electing to field Fives were soon put to the sword by the visitor's opener's Sparrow and 15 year old Tom Westley. Despite notable effort by both bowler's and fielder's an excellent innings of 111 not out by the youngster allowed Saffron to declare at 252-3, Terry Ballard and Jeremy Mordrick being Fives only wicket takers.
In reply the champion's decided to keep the old ball and opened the bowling with veteren Tim Smith and leg spinner Sparrow making runs exceptionally hard to come by. Fives were very soon well behind the required run rate to win the game and the priority became achieving a draw, which they duly did thanks to some patient, applied batting.
Fives went away with 5 points and the visitor's 9, probably a true reflection of the contest. Fives take heart from not conceding victory when faced with a very large total to chase and with notable absentee's such as Brendan Smith, Dan Stevens, Gordon Wharlow and Rahul Bhome to return in the coming weeks, more positive performances will surely come.
