Match report Losing a key toss last Saturday at the Paddock, F&H were asked to bat by Hainalt & Clayhall and following the early dissapointing departure of the comfortable looking Rahul Bhome, Sheeny Edwards and Gordon Wharlow set about putting together a solid foundation to the innings. Their partnership of 75, although slow, did give the necessarry foundation and following Wharlow's departure, run out for 27 (from 82 balls), Terry Ballard speeded the run rate up with a quick-fire 39 and Fives looked set for a total of around 270. However, with wickets falling at key periods of the innings and following the departure of Edwards for 55 (from 150 balls), Fives were left with two new batsmen at the crease during the crucial last 12 overs of their innings. A fine partnership of 70 between Ben Britton, who made 34 (from 31 balls) and Jeremy Mordrick (31no from 45 balls) helped F&H finally make 244-7 from their 66 overs, a total they always felt was 20 or 30 short of what was required.
These thoughts were to be proved correct, as Hainalt & Clayhall's strong top order batting line up set about knocking off the runs. The Fives bowlers battled hard and were backed up by an excellent effort in the field, Mordrick shuffled his bowlers around and although there were glimmers of hope, Hainalt always looked the likely winners. Ashaq Ahmed making a chanceless 113 and skipper Irfan Shah with 59no taking them home with 3 overs to spare. Possibly the highlight of the day (certainly for Fives) was Ballard's amazing one handed diving catch to dismiss former F&H player Zobie Sharif.
Fives now look forward to a home encounter against bottom place Wescliff-on-sea next week, when they will be hoping to get their first league win of the season.
