Match report It would be a massive understatement to say that this was a dissapointing result for F&H 1st XI, the game is best summed up by saying that Fives, as a team, played excellently from 11-30 in the morning until 5-30 in the evening to get themselves into a clear match winning position (83 for 1 chasing 199).....only to throw the game away over the next hour by capitulating to 139 all out.
That said, the guys must take some positives from this game, move on, and hopefully with some key players returning from university and school pull themselves up and out of the relegation zone as they have in previous years.
Winning the toss the visitors were invited to bat, Fives used all of their bowlers to top effect, switching and changing their options to bowl Wescliff out for 199 in 63 overs. Chris White and Brendan Smith bowled particularly well and in Smith's case certainly deserved more than his 2 wickets.
A score of 199 should have been reasonably easy to chase on a flat track at the paddock on a fine warm day. Following the early departure of Rahul Bhome to an exceptional catch behind, Sheeny Edwards (46) and youngster Tom Yallop (44) set about repairing the damage and built a good solid partnership that saw Fives to tea on 75 for 1 with a minimum of 36 overs still to be bowled at them.
What happened after tea is difficult to explain, credit should be given to Wescliff for fighting hard when the door was opened for them, but the way that Fives middle order collapsed was very dissapointing and dispite some late resistance from skipper Jeremy Mordrick (27), Wescliff managed to pull off a very unlikely victory to move themselves from the bottom of the table to be replaced by Fives.
Luckily for Fives, they have been in this situation before and there is no question that the spirit and character exists within the team to recover from this set-back and fight their way up the table.
