Ilford v Fives and Heronians Cricket Club Saturday 1st XI on Sat 12 Jun 2004 at 11.30
Fives and Heronians Cricket Club Won 21 runs
Match report
Following a dissapointing run of three consective defeats, Fives earned a well deserved first league victory of the season at Valentines Park on Saturday. After losing the toss and being asked to bat, Dan Stevens and 16 year old Tom Yallop gave F&H a flying start with the first 50 coming within the first ten overs. These two openers departed in close succession and although the run rate slowed, Gordie Wharlow and Sheeny Edwards then put on a very solid partnership until Edwards was unluckily run out just before lunch by a return drive clipping the bowlers hand and running him out at the non strikers end. A score of 138-3 at lunch should have been the foundation for a score high in the two hundreds. Unfortunately Fives middle order again didn't produce as many runs as they would have liked, Wharlow battled through however to make an excellent 84 and with the tail end support of all-rounder Jonny Kay (27) helped Fives post a score of 231.
In reply Kay and Brenden Smith bowled exceptionally well and were rewarded with the wickets of Dar and the dangerous Kandola early on to give Fives early hope. Khan joined skipper Diwan in putting together a good partnership, however, the tight Fives bowling was constantly building pressure on these two, forcing the required run rate to increase. When Jeremy Mordrick finally removed Khan for 58 and then Chris White followed up with another wicket in the next over Fives started to look on the ascendency. Regular wickets now fell and the pressure increased on Diwan to pull off victory for the home side single handedly. James Swash was having a blinder behind the stumps, when he caught Tavarasa to give Fives their 8th wicket he had held six catches and a couple of overs later Mordrick had cleaned up the further two Ilford wickets to give himself a six wicket haul and Fives 20 points.
