Hainault & Clayhall v Fives and Heronians Cricket Club Saturday 4th XI on Sat 29 May 2004 at 1.30
Fives and Heronians Cricket Club Lost 3 wickets
Match report
On winning the toss, Fives took first use of a pitch which looked worse than it played. Another excellent opening partnership of 51 in 13 overs from vice skipper Franklin and the evergreen Simon McKay, happily restored to the team after many summers of kitchen and bathroom renovation, held out the promise of 200 but the middle order became sadly bogged down, reliant on Clive's flashing blade as he moved to 57 in only 70 minutes with a series of blazing cover drives. A lengthy lethargic period was relieved when typically rustic Rotsey heaves took the team tantalisingly close to the six bonus point mark only for some muddled thinking by our last pair in failing to run on the last ball of the innings left us one short. Fives stuck with the old ball, now soft and out of shape, using McKay's medium swingers and Maddo's looping off-spin to take the pace off the ball. The introduction of OJ Harbord gave us off-spin and both ends and after a shaky start he settled to bowl the longest spell yet in his career, 18 overs, 3 for 67 - an excellent performance. At thge other end veteran Maddison got through maiden after maiden (something he hasn't done since his early years on skiing holidays when the German Frauleins were much to his liking) to increase the pressure. Wickets gradually fell with Tim Nash picking up two fine stumpings. Eventually, as the bowlers tired, Keith Hurst's young son and a very well organised number 9 gradually took control. As last throw of the dice, the new ball was taken with 30 required to win but unfortunately the ball disappeared to all parts to bring victory in to Hainault despite Maddo's 4 for 57 from a marathon 22 overs.
