Match report Fives won the toss at Hutton, and with one eye on the weather and still looking for thier first win of the season, inserted their top of the table opponents. Aftera couple of useful early overs when the bat was often beaten Hutton's intentions soon became clear as both openers blazed away to put on 169 for the first wicket in only 16 overs. Even the introduction of ever-economical spin twins Maddo and Boblet failed to stem the flow allowing Hutton to declare on 201-1 after 22 overs. This agressive declaration had the intent of allowing Hutton to complete 25 overs before the promised rain arrived thus securing them 8 points, however, it left Fives what turned out to be a potential 77 overs as the met man duly got it wrong again and play remained uninterupted. Attritional batting by Stan the Man (23 in 98 balls) allowed the free-scoring Seymour, Nash and Rotsey to bat round him to reach 99-2 off 33 overs. A middle order collapse was followed by an inspired piece of controlled hitting by Tom Mitchell (39 off 31 balls) and a measured 24 from Maddo as Fives inched towards the target. The 7th, 8th and 9th wickets went down for 12 runs leaving the last pair of Walters and Bob Speller with the daunting task of making 12 to win from 19 overs - money on the ball as Maddo remarked!!! With the captain's injunction to Bob as he went out to bat to "get 'em in singles" ringing in his ears Bob survived 32 balls - probably his longest ever innings for Fives - for 3* while John Walters calmly coloected singles, byes etc at the other end. After 10 overs of torment for the watching team ( 4 ciggies each to Adrian and Dave) John finally tickled one round the corner to complete a hard-earned and unexpected victory. This was the first win of the season and an excellent all round team performance against the best side in the League.
