Match report With Fives needing to go for wins to avoid relegation the whole team was fired up. A strong start was made by the seam attack of Walters, Connell and Sayyed with Ted Connell being the pick taking 3 for 9 off his first six overs. For the second week running, Fives then came up against a second teamer playing for the opposition 4th’s. Playing with great power he lead a stand of 120 which was only broken by a policy of frustrating him which lead to a rash shot against Bob Speller’s arm ball. At the other end, Alan Rotsey in his first match for a year bowled well to take 3 for 52 despite having four catches dropped, one by his embarrassed father.

Fives would have settled for a target of 187 in 52 overs before the match and set off expecting to win. However, a very fast but very wayward opener ripped out our first three for 40 which included 14 wides. A consolidating stand between Craig Nicholls and VJ, freshly returned from the school trip to Barbados, was undone by some sloppy middle and later order batting in which wickets were given away with loose shots and a foolish run-out which reduced Fives to 135-9 with seven overs left. Craig was now reduced to looking for bonus points and put on 28 for the last wicket (Bob Speller 2) before the returning speedster found the edge of Bob’s bat with 2 overs left.

This was a game which could and should have been won requiring only a little more application from the batting after the bowlers had performed well.
