Match report In an "up and down" season Fives, despite being a player short, recorded their second win as they battle to avoid relegation. Unusually, both wins have come against teams who were, at the time, top of the table.
Walthamstow won the toss and batted first on a very hot afternoon. For the third week running Walters and Connel performed admirably with the new ball causing much playing and missing and having a number of very good LBW shouts turned down. Alan Rotsey contributed a marathon spell of 19 overs without ever being collared despite a violently struck 63 off 77 balls by Del Alexander (5 sixes) who eventually perished to great catch by Clive over 100 yards away at deepest cow to give Ed Connell the excellent return of 3 -18 off 12. Although the heat and a lengthy drinks interval caused Fives to be their slowest ever to completer 52 overs, Stow still managed to get through 48 (would have been 50) by taking the old ball and extensive use of their spinners. A steady start by hot and weary Fives batters got us to 57-3 in the 19th over. With Commander Greene playing with increasing assurance and aggression joined by the skipper playing with unusual restraint and selectivity progress against the spinners accelerated forcing Stow to take the new ball in worsening light. Although it swung around, it also went quicker off the bat with the Commander palying some impressive square cuts. By now the two oldest menbers of the team were definitely suffering from the heat and dehydration but with a bit of luck the target was achiieved with a couple of overs to spare with the only blemish being Steve's unfortunate stumping with the scores level.
