Fives and Heronians Cricket Club Saturday 4th XI v Hutton on Sat 14 Aug 2004 at 1.30
Fives and Heronians Cricket Club Won 4 wkts
Match report
Needing a win to salvage something from their season, Fives inserted Hutton on a decent track at Old Chigs. Hutton made their usual aggressive start bringing up 50 in the 9th over before James Lawes in his first match of the season persuaded their big hitter to offer a catch rather than whack it into spaces as he had done earlier in the season. A switch of ends proved helpful to John Walters who bowled in partnership with new player, Lucky - don't ask how to spell his full name - pegging the scoring and picking up three wickets between them. Hutton continued to make good progress despite three wickets for Boblet, now back to his form of last year following injury, eventually closing on 268-7 off 52 overs. Despite Fives slow over rate, they expected 50-55 overs to chase this down. A hare and tortoise opening partnership of Lawes (unknown quantity having not batted this year and only once last year) and the dependable Neary got us off to a good start. As Lawsey rode his luck to make 50 off 33 balls, Cheery kept the other end safe. Once Lawsey departed for 50 out of the first 58 trying one big hit too many Graham took over the run scoring while Commander Greene played himself in for another important innings. Lucky, having excelled in the field, showed that he could bat a bit making an aggressive 63 before being stumped going for another big one. When Greenie and Alan Rotsey departed in two balls with Fives requiring 65 off 9 overs things looked tight but aggressive hitting from Raggie with 4 fours in one over tipped the balance. With the skipper striking 45 from 38 balls Fives got home with two overs to spare. As far as can be remembered this was the highest run-chase win for Fives 4th team with almost everyone making important contributions against a strong Hutton side.
