Match report Fives were unlucky to lose a decisive toss and were put in on a damp wicket. After Franklin inexplicably left a straight one OJ and Stan Foley consolidated to get Fives to 48-1 in the 17th over. Stan was unable to accellerate and fell for a dour 17 off 67 balls. Chris Rotsey and Commander Greene then put on 35 in half an hour before the Skipper fell for 31 losing his concentration for the umpteenth time this season. (Comments about senile decay were heard from the boundary.) Thereafter the innings became somewhat laboured until Ted Connell, given licence to go for it, struck 21 off 13 balls to take Fives tantalisingly close to two more batting points. Once again the wily Windebank collected a 5-for, albeit with his ususal miserly figures dented by Rotsey and Connell. By the time GP&R came to bat, the wicket had pretty much dried out and the outfield quickened. With Gidea Par star Ron Montgomery opening Fives decided to take the pace off the ball opening with Del Maddison and Alan Rotsey. The first 15 overs included 6 maidens and cost only 29. While Montgomery continued to select the rare bad ball and hit it for 4 or 6, Les Hall blocked away at the other end until the 24th over when he departed for 6 out of 69 - even stodgier than Stan had been! The breakthrough was achieved by John Walters bowling really well with the new ball. After being hit for 14 in an over, John reponded superbly first by bowling a maiden to Montgomery and then removing him with the first ball of his next over thanks to an excellent diving catch by the Commander in the gully. Whan Alan Rotsey came back to relieve John he lured the number 3 into a skied drive expertly held by Ted Connell but this was to be the last success for Fives despite several bowling changes seeking further wickets.
