South Woodford v Fives and Heronians Cricket Club Saturday 4th XI on Sat 04 Sep 2004 at 1.00
Match was Drawn
Match report
South Woodford won the toss and elected to bat first on probably one of the hottest days of the year.
Their objective was to achieve 10+ points to secure safety in their relegation battle. A 1st wicket
partnership of121 soon put them in command. However, a couple of dropped catches
could have changed things significantly. Mark Hutchinson bowled well in his 5 over spell before
turning his ankle. John Walters bowled well although a little too much on leg stump by his
usual high standards. Maddo then came on to bowl at the end which, had a short boundary so
struggled to keep the run flow in check but stuck to the task admirably (4-80 off 17 overs).
OJ also bowled his off spin to good effect at the other end. South Woodford ended up
declaring at 243-7 off 43 overs, a positive declaration on a good batting wicket. Special note
should be made of the efforts in the field by Steve Greene (thanks for your support),
Jeremy Waller (his first league match for the club) and John Walters' catch.
In reply, OJ again, batted well scoring 25 in a 1st wicket partnership of 36 runs. A 2nd wicket
partnership between Clive Franklin (alias the silver fox) and Stan Foley (the run out specialist)
started to put F&H in a good position with 20 overs plus half an hour remaining. However,
once skipper Clive was out on 52 (incl one straight six over Long On's head!!), Stan could
not take the initiative despite the carrot being dangled by South Woodford. Stan was out
for a steady 42 and Adam Peters saw us to safety with a 24*. A reply of 184-7 was
achieved in 55 overs. A disappointing end to the league season (6 points). However,
South Woodford's bowling was very tight and accurate.
