Fives and Heronians Cricket Club Sunday Cup XI v Potters Bar on Sun 06 Jun 2004 at 2-00
Fives and Heronians Cricket Club Won 5 wickets
Match report
A really good game between two evenly matched sides on an good wicket at the Paddock saw Fives come out on top in a 500 run afternoon thanks to an excellent 120 not out from the 'out of form second eleven number 8' Rob McKay. There is an old maxim in captaincy which says that any given day is somebody's day and the trick is to find out whos day it is early and make them do as much as possible. Though I may not have realised it at the time, Rob's 7 overs 2 for 39 was a sign of what was to come with the bat. Adrian 'Tino' Palmer also bought his way to 3 wickets with a mixture of very good and slightly less good balls but he did clean bowl their opening batsman on 90 which isalways a feat! The other wickets were picked up by Brendan who bowled exceptionally well in his first spell and didn't take a wicket and then cam in off three steps in his second for a couple of overs and picked up two, in part thanks to a very good catch by Matt Sutton. In the batting Gary seems to have fully rediscovered his form driving strongly through the off side early on en route to a good 67, batting for a long time with Rob during a stand of 115 which set up the victory. Ably supported by Steve Ambridge and at the end by Chris White, the required runs were knocked off with a couple of overs to spare. An excellent day all round with some players taking good advantage of the fixture to really find some form for the league games ahead. The strong availability made a real difference to the quality of cricket being played and made fora much more enjoyable day all round! It was just a pity the bar ran out of beer so early!! Good job there were bottles in the fridge! Let's hope there is equally strong availability for the match against the Wells in a couple of weeks time which should be a really good day out!
