Fives and Heronians Cricket Club Sunday Cup XI v Blackheath on Sun 27 Jun 2004 at 2-00
Match was Abandoned
Match report
A rain affected match against a strong Blackheath side saw Fives make a good total of 212-8 off 44 of the originally intended 45 overs before the rain brought a slightly premature tea interval which ultimately proved to be the last action of note in the game despite attemptes to restart the match after the interval. Jon Thurston made an extremely gutsy 39, in a most un-JT like 30 overs, against a quick and hostile kiwi opening bowler, taking a number of blows to the body in the process (though his biggest concern was whether these numerous bruises would affect his golf match tomorrow!). It was a vital contribution as well after first James McKay was picked up to a screaming catch at gully only to be followed the next ball by the skipper who was comprehensively bowled by what their players described as the best ball of the game. The partnership of 137 with Nick Rotsey set a solid base for the Fives total. Nick batted in a very controled and disciplined manner putting together his second substantial innings of the weekend and reaching a well deserved hundred with a typically pugnacious on drive. His 125 was almost singularly responsible for the competitive nature of the Fives total as the middle order quickly fell away following JT's dismissal (including Graham Neary going one better than the skipper by being run out without even facing a ball!), leaving Reggie to add some valuable support towards the end of the innings. Sadly the rain intervened preventing the match to reach a conclusion though it would have most likely been a close result between two good sides.
