Fives and Heronians Cricket Club Won 63 runs
Match report
With the after effects of the club BBQ still very much apparent in a number of our players we made our way to Southgate in good time for a pub lunch. After dragging most of the team out of the pub just in time to get to the ground before the scheduled start the skipper managed to win the toss thereby saving us from having to try and field with the hangovers kicking in! The news did mean however that Sooty and Chalky stayed in the pub for another hour to supplement their previous night's excesses. A flat track and one of the quickest outfields of the year saw Fives race to 61 off the first 10 overs and although the scoring rate slowed slightly a sixth wicket stand of 77 in just 9 overs helped us to 247 and a declaration. Gordon batted in a very controlled manner throughout the innings making a clinical 127* and Ian Rotsey made 45 towards the end of the innings. The only other highlight was Nick Rotsey, having looked like scoring a lot of runs very quickly (racing to 18 off just 6 balls) running down the wicket to what can only be described as a hand grenade of a ball which was so slow it barely even reached the other end, and somehow managing to run straight past it!! Whilst the after effects of the BBQ were wearing off on most people by the time we came to field, not everyone was doing quite so well. Chalky was by far the worst, struggling massively with just about everything it seemed, so it was with a certain nervousness that I threw him the ball to take over from Veejay after a very good opening spell in which he had picked up two wickets. Chalky, coming in off two steps, proceded to bowl 12 overs straight off of looping and turning off breaks and picked up three wickets to boot! At the other end his spin twin was Wheeling away and picking up wickets almost for fun as he recorded yet another Sunday 5 for and the innings was mopped up with a minimum of fuss allowing us to all get back into the bar for a beer! Sadly this part of the day was marred slightly by half the team, and as always it was the younger half, leaving the ground so fast we had hardly even got off the pitch. This is a great pity as they miss out on one of the most important bits of the Sunday game: having a beer (or any other non-alcoholic drink if you don't want a beer) with your team mates and the opposition. I hope that parents and players alike will make more effort during the second half of the season to experience the social side of the game as well as the playing side! Never-the-less, a very enjoyable day for all who played!
