Match report Fives lost the toss and were put in on a decent wicket. We expected Goresbrook 3rd's to be strong, and they turned out to be as good as any team we played last year in the Premier Div. They are new to the Essex League and despite their having a 4th team, their 3rd team were entered into the lowest division of the 4th team League. Nevertheless, Mikey Thompson and Uriel got us off to a good start against a very decent attack before Elsom (5 - 39 off 11) got them and Zahid. What followed was an excellent stand by Latif, 45, and new boy Arbaz with a maiden 50. Both looked comfortable and played some classy shots. After they went, only Raza made a significant contribution and we fell away to end on 178, at least 25 short of par on that wicket.
Goresbrook made a good start against tidy bowling from Taha and Habib. The skipper shuffled the bowling attack until Waled and Uriel picked up three wickets. This brought in Michael Wilson who played a classy innings of 56 off 46 balls including one very large 6 off Latif to take the game away from us. Latif had the consolation of removing their stubborn opener with a ripping legbreak before Goresbrook inched over the line with 2 overs to spare. Unfortunately we conceded (according to Goresbrook's rather stringent umpires) nearly 30 wides. Without this, they would have been under pressure. Another creditable performance with some positives to take into next week's game against Ilford.
