Chingford 4th X1 v Fives and Heronians Cricket Club Saturday 4th XI on Sat 24 Aug 2019 at 12.30
Fives and Heronians Cricket Club Won by 5wkts

Match report F&H were unfortunate to lose the toss and be asked to field first on one of the hottest days of the year. The team's mood was not improved when they discovered that, yet again, Chingford were playing their 2nd team standard opening bat who had already made 1,600 (sic) runs this year! Last time he hit 56* off 26 balls so we quickly adopted a policy of lots of having men deep saving 2's and 4's. This restricted him to 69 off 61 balls and eventually frustrated him into one heave too many and Andre Byfield, in his first match for a year, held a fine catch on the deep cow boundary despite carrying an injury. Chingford's other opener, Blakey, ploughed on to a stodgy 50 while "ringer" Navaz, one of two specially registered for the day, got a decent 40. Fives bowling held up really well with U13 Rayn bowling his off-spin with great confidence and Habib returning for a second spell and picking up 3 wickets. Chingford finished on 208 for 6 off 44 overs leaving us 41 overs to get them.

After bowling 10 overs, Uriel returned to the top of the order with Yaz, who had bowled 12. Both belied their years, shook off their bowling exertions and got us off to an excellent start. After Yaz went, Andre joined his father-in-law in a useful run a ball stand to get us slightly ahead of the asking rate and when he departed, Aarav, returning after a 6 week absence, kept up the momentum. The introduction of Chingford's ringer, Navaz with his clever googlies caused a mini collapse with 3 quick wickets while Uriel carried on serenely at the other end (Stokes-like concentration!) Enter the skipper to support Uriel's ongoing effort. When drinks were taken at 30 overs, Uriel discovered he was on 93 with 26 required to win. By now the skipper was striking the ball a little to well and had to rein himself in while Uriel worked towards his second ton for the Club, taking 12 balls to get there from 96 before finishing with a flourish, smacking a boundary with 4 overs to spare.

This was only our second win of the year and was especially rewarding as we had to battle both the heat and Chingford's ringers. All the Colts held up well but the man of the match by a country mile was Uriel who was clearly spurred on by the presence of his wife, daughter and grandchildren. Needless to say, their attendance at future matches will be encouraged!
