Hainault & Clayhall v Fives and Heronians Cricket Club Academy XI on Sat 13 Sep 2008 at 1pm
Fives and Heronians Cricket Club Won by 6 wkts
Match report
Steve Glass won the toss for Hainault & Clayhall and opted to bat first on a wet track - comments at the time were that it looked more like an April wicket than a September one! Eventually the sun broke through and it was the best cricket weather for nearly two months. Accurate opening bowling from Stuart Chinaloy anmd Michael (Mikey) Knapton created early pressure with Mikey benefitting from three catches, one of which in the deep by James Sibley being a particularly good effort. While Jack Jerrom created pressure by bowling with pace (but too wide of the off stump) James reaped the rewards of bowling straight and finished with an excellent 3 for 8 off six overs. Jag helped work through the middle order with two for five off six before Michael returned to claim the last two wickets and get his first "five-fer" for which he was presented with the match ball.
On that wicket, 80 was never going to be easy and in the end it took 41 overs of patient endeavour. After 15 overs the score had only reached 18 during which time Jake Poulter had to be carried off with a torn hamstring and the normally free-scoring Jerrom was restricted to a mere 8 runs. Patient rebuilding by Nikhil Pillai and the oldest Rotsey took the score to 57 before Nik became the secong batsman bamboozled into a C & B by the wiles of Dennis Forbes, H&C's leading wicket taker on Sundays this year. When Jag perished LBW to one that kept low it was left to 12 year old guest player Peter Kilpatrick to accompany the skipper to victory with a patient and composed 4 off 26 balls.
This match was a very competent display against an H & C team containing four 3rd and 4th teamers and confirmed the considerable progress made by the Academy squad this year. Bowling and fielding have improved in leaps and bounds across the squad and there have been some good innings at different times by Rocket Ronnie, Alex McKie and Robbie Sheehan, all of which bodes well for our secong League season in 2009.
