Ford Sports v Fives and Heronians Cricket Club Under 13 on Sun 11 Jul 2004 at 9-30am
Fives and Heronians Cricket Club Won 3 wickets
Match report
The last of the group matches in the Stentiford Trophy was the tightest of affairs, but Fives managed to hold their nerve with Richard Kirchell hitting the winning runs with just 3 balls to spare, despite only having 10 men.
After captain for the day Joe Mordrick had won the toss he decided to put Ford Sports into bat, however, the opening pair put a decent score together helped by too many wides. The first wicket fell at 52 with Michael Ayrton taking a good catch at mid-on, Michael was to take another great catch in the field off the bowling of Mordrick. The oppositions other 3 wickets fell to Kirchell (2) and Matt Sullivan, with Oliver Woolf making the catch in the field look comfortable.
Fives were set a target of 116, and Rory Uwins and Woolf set about the task of requiring almost 6 an over. They made a slow start but then Uwins started opening up and scoring freely. Woolf went for 9, and Tom Jenkins came and went quickly for 5.
Michael Ayrton was next in and he and Uwins put together the partnership of the day, in 2 overs they had hit 22 runs, which bought the run rate down significantly. Uwins then had to retire at 27, and Harry Deol came in and scored 4 before being caught. Next up was Mordrick and helped push the score along hitting 7 before being run out trying to chase the score. Ayrton then retired on 25, and although the score looked achievable we were moving down the batting order. Max Sanders and Matt Sullivan were next in and scored 5 and 1 respectively before walking back to the pavilion. James Ayrton who stepped in late in the day was bowled for 0, and it was now left to Kirchell to hit the winning runs. Requiring 4 off the final over, the spectators were quiet, and you could feel the tension, Kirchell hit 2 off the 1st ball of the final over, surely it was Fives match now? The next ball was safely in the keepers hands before Kirchell had time to swing at it. 4 balls left still 2 runs required.
The 3rd ball of the over came down the wicket, Kirchell kept his eye firmly on the target and hit a tremendous 4, the match had been won with 3 balls to spare and the delight and relief of the team and crowd was there for all to see, the rest of the team running on the pitch to congratulate Kirchell on keeping his nerve and hitting the winning runs. A great team effort with the 'Men of the match' going to Michael Ayrton and Rory Uwins.
