Match report Fives and Heronians started life back in division one with a thrilling two wicket win against Westcliff-on-Sea at The Paddock on Saturday.

Having won the toss and elected to bat, the visitors reached 207-7 from their 52 overs. The mainstay was Ben McKeith who hit 109 from 138 balls and shared a fourth wicket partnership of 97 with Sam Weller (44). Despite some excellent running between the wickets their stand was broken thanks to a superb direct hit from mid-wicket by Chris White to run out Weller with Johnny Kay (1-47 from 14 overs) returning to get the centurion caught behind by Glenn Jackson who bagged 4 excellent catches as keeper.

Fives managed to pick-up some later order wickets in the pursuit of quick runs with 15 year old Jamie Porter collecting 3-53 from 12 overs, whilst Rahul Bhome (1-41) and Carlos Remy (1-42) also took scalps.

Despite the seemingly looking below-par Paddock score, Fives were quickly reduced to 6-2 then 43-4 and when Gordon Whorlow fell for 37 with the score 81-5 and the last 20 overs about to begin the hosts were slipping to defeat.

Skipper Terry Ballard then turned the game with some mighty blows to smack 62 in 48 balls with 6 fours and 3 sixes and in partnership with Glenn Jackson added 76 in quick time. Ballard holed out with the score 157-6 but Jackson then took the leading role and moved to 50 as Fives moved closer to victory.

Two further wickets left Fives at 191-8 with still 17 required. Jackson then stroked a class on-drive over the top for four off Rhodes leaving 13 wanted from 18 balls. With Kay taking a single from the first ball from the next over bowled by spinner Wade, Jackson then launched two superb straight sixes to give the hosts a great start and a two wicket win. Jackson finished unbeaten on a wonderful 67 from 71 balls with 7 fours and 3 sixes.

Fives next travel to Wickford on Saturday in SNEL division one.
